What:
FLIGHT is the Ultimate Frisbee team at Independence High School, established in 2008. Ultimate is a fast-paced team sport played with a flying disc on a field similar to football and featuring athletes in constant motion, precision throws, acrobatic catches and blocks, and a focus on sportsmanship. Ultimate is played competitively in Middle School, High School, College, and post-college, including a professional league (UFL) and the World Games. Since its inception, IHS FLIGHT has consistently been one of the top teams in the state, with several State Championships.
Who:
We will field a girls varsity team, a boys varsity team, and maybe a boys JV team. We welcome players of all experience levels. Be ready to run!
When:
Official tryouts are in November, and the season officially starts in January, but there are several voluntary activities in the “pre-season” late summer and fall.
PRE-SEASON
Summer thru October: player captains are organizing unofficial “off-season” practices, conditioning, and pickup games. Interested players (even beginners!) are encouraged to attend these events. Watch for announcements on the pre-season GroupMe!
Nov 9-10: FLIGHT returning players (from spring 2024) will travel to Louisville for a pre-season warm-up tournament.
IN-SEASON
Oct 29, 7pm, IHS library: Parent and Player Intro meeting. If you are interested in the Spring 2025 season, you will want to be at this meeting. Watch for announcements / updates on social media and the pre-season GroupMe!
Nov 12th and 14th, 3:30pm, Sara Benson Park: Tryouts for both boys and girls teams.
Nov 14th: virtual meeting FAQs (optional). Details and links to be distributed after the Parent Intro meeting
Nov– Dec 2024: fundraising, uniform orders, beginning of conditioning program and some continuation of captain-led practices.
January: start of mandatory practices, Tues and Thurs every week from 3:30ish to 5:30
February-May: Tournament season. We will compete in approximately 6 weekend tournaments throughout the season, as well as periodic local scrimmages during regular practice times. (sometimes we will attend an early-season “warm-up” tournament in November, but the official season is the spring)
Where:
Practices will be at Sara Benson Park (aka Thompson’s Station Park), and hopefully some ON-campus at IHS. Tournaments will include a few local but mostly travel to regional tournaments that host dozens of other teams (like Chattanooga, Atlanta, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, or Chicago).
What can I do right now?
1) If you are new to the team, start by joining the GroupMe for pre-season communication, especially in case some of the above schedule changes unexpectedly.
2) Follow us on Instagram and/or Twitter . We use Instagram for fun news, pics, and vids, as well as some official announcements. We use twitter for real-time score updates at our scrimmages and tournaments.
3) Go to our website (www.ihsflight.com), and watch some highlight videos. We will post some blog news (not very often) there, too.
4) If you want to learn more about Ultimate in general, go to USAUltimate.org, especially the “discover ultimate” section.
